ISSUE 37 - Choosing Alignment Over Obligation
Choosing alignment over obligation can be incredibly difficult. It’s something I’ve struggled with for much of my life.
As a mother, that challenge can feel even greater. Our children become our world, and it’s easy to lose ourselves in caring for everyone else. This week reminded me that choosing yourself isn’t about loving others less, it’s about creating the capacity to love them well while still honoring the life you’re meant to live.
After months of renovating my grandfather’s new home, increasing the value of the property, finding an incredible in-home caretaker, and helping coordinate every detail of his move, the reaction I received wasn’t what I had hoped for. It was painful.
But I also understand. Moving from independence to dependence is one of life’s hardest transitions. It brings fear, grief, and uncertainty. I can have compassion for what he’s experiencing while also recognizing that having him live in my home full-time with my young children wasn’t what was best for him, for my family, or for me.
For one of the first times in my life, I chose alignment over guilt. That was a huge step. It’s something I struggled with throughout my marriage, in friendships, and in other relationships. I often believed love meant sacrificing myself. Today, I no longer believe that.
Having boundaries is a beautiful idea. Holding them is an entirely different energy. Holding boundaries with compassion, understanding, strength, and integrity is one of the greatest acts of self-respect we can practice. I also believe it’s a signal to the universe that we’re ready for what’s next, that we’re willing to trust ourselves enough to stop abandoning who we are in order to make everyone else comfortable.
Choosing yourself isn’t selfish. In fact, I believe it serves the collective. Every one of us has unique gifts that only we can bring into the world. There are dreams I feel called to build through Manifest in Motion that simply cannot happen if I’m constantly sacrificing all of my energy to meet everyone else’s needs.
If you are constantly abandoning yourself for other people’s needs, desires, and purposes, helping them get where they need to go while neglecting your own path, your ability to attract what is truly meant for you becomes diminished. You begin to pour your energy into building someone else’s life and someone else’s dreams, and in doing so, it can quietly drain your own soul’s momentum. Over time, it becomes harder to call in the life, opportunities, and alignment that are actually meant for you, because your energy is no longer anchored in your own becoming.
Ironically, overprotecting others can also prevent their own growth.
No matter our age, as long as we’re alive, our soul is still learning. Every new season of life brings opportunities to grow, adapt, and become someone new. Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is allow people the dignity of walking through their own challenges while we continue walking toward our purpose.
This week also marked a huge milestone for Manifest in Motion. We officially booked our August photoshoot featuring real women from our community and from my own life. That feels incredibly meaningful because Manifest in Motion has never been about perfection, it’s about real people choosing themselves one intentional step at a time.
For me personally, stepping in front of the camera is its own act of growth. Rebuilding my confidence after the past several years hasn’t happened overnight. Being photographed is still something that stretches me, but that’s exactly why it’s important. It’s a reminder that I’m no longer hiding behind my vision, I’m willing to become part of it. It’s something I couldn’t have done a few years ago.
Now that so much of my energy can return to what I’m building, I feel excited about what’s ahead. The next few months may look new to the outside world, but they’ve been years in the making behind the scenes. My intention is to continue attracting people who are choosing alignment, healing, growth, and purpose.
So if you’re in a season where you constantly feel asked to abandon your own needs, dreams, or desires for everyone around you, I want to remind you of this… You don’t have to sacrifice your entire life in order to love someone.
Even if all you have is five or ten minutes a day, reconnect with yourself. Move your body. Process an emotion that no longer serves you. Spend a few moments dreaming about the life you want to create. Then take one small action toward it.
Those small, aligned actions compound over time. As you begin changing your inner world, the universe has a remarkable way of rearranging your outer world to meet the person you’re becoming.
Keep choosing alignment. Your future self is already waiting for you there.
